# From John Marshall Champion to Richmond's Rising Star: Aiden Argabright Enters Sophomore Season With Big Expectations
The former John Marshall standout earned preseason Atlantic 10 recognition after an impressive freshman campaign. Now, with Richmond's season opener approaching, the hometown guard faces his next challenge.
## A Richmond Basketball Story Comes Full Circle
RICHMOND, VA — October 30, 2026
Three days before the University of Richmond opens its 2026–27 men's basketball season, one of the Spiders' most important returning players carries a particularly meaningful connection to the city.
Aiden Argabright, a former John Marshall High School standout, enters his sophomore campaign as a Preseason All-Atlantic 10 Third Team selection.
The recognition, announced October 19, follows a freshman season in which Argabright established himself as one of the conference's most productive newcomers.
For Richmond basketball supporters, his development represents another example of local high school talent making an impact at the Division I level.
## Built Through Richmond Basketball
Before joining the Spiders, Argabright helped John Marshall capture consecutive Virginia High School League Class 2 state championships in 2024 and 2025.
During his senior season, he averaged 19.9 points, 4.6 assists and 2.7 steals per game.
He also shot 48% from three-point range and 86% from the free-throw line.
Those performances earned him First Team Class 2 All-State recognition and helped establish his reputation as an accomplished local guard.
Rather than leaving the region for college basketball, Argabright continued his career at the University of Richmond.
His decision has created a direct connection between the city's high school basketball community and the Atlantic 10.
## Freshman Success Creates Sophomore Expectations
Argabright averaged 10.8 points, 2.0 assists and 1.2 steals during his first collegiate season.
His scoring average led all Atlantic 10 freshmen, while his 2.6 assist-to-turnover ratio ranked fifth among all conference players.
He also became Richmond's first Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team selection since Grant Golden in 2018.
The conference recognized his performances with four Rookie of the Week awards.
Those accomplishments helped Argabright earn preseason recognition entering his second year.
However, individual success does not eliminate the challenges ahead.
Richmond enters the season with 10 newcomers, creating a significantly different roster around its returning guard.
## New Faces Bring New Opportunities
Head coach Chris Mooney enters his 22nd season leading the Spiders.
Among Richmond's additions are transfers Jamie Kaiser Jr., Jack McCaffery, Dominick Stewart and Amon Dörries.
The newcomers have already demonstrated their offensive potential.
During Richmond's October 18 exhibition against James Madison, Kaiser scored 17 points while McCaffery added 14.
The Spiders overcame a 14-point first-half deficit before ultimately falling 90–81.
Argabright contributed to Richmond's comeback, including two free throws during a 17–0 scoring run.
Although exhibition results do not count toward the regular-season standings, the performance provided an early look at how Richmond's new roster might develop.
## November 2 Marks the Next Chapter
Richmond officially begins its season Monday, November 2, hosting UNC Asheville at the Robins Center.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Spiders return home Thursday, November 5, against Southern Virginia before traveling to Philadelphia to face Temple on November 8.
Richmond was selected ninth in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll, while crosstown rival VCU received the conference's top ranking.
Those expectations establish an early challenge for a Richmond team attempting to build chemistry while remaining competitive in conference play.
## Why His Journey Matters
For young players throughout Richmond, Argabright's progression demonstrates that local basketball development can lead directly to Division I opportunities.
His path includes high school championships, individual recognition and meaningful collegiate production.
Now comes the challenge of sustaining that success.
As Richmond prepares for opening night, Argabright represents more than a returning starter.
He represents a Richmond basketball success story still being written — from John Marshall's championship teams to the Atlantic 10 stage.
