Virginia's high school basketball season is approaching, and Richmond is preparing to play a major role in how it ends.
The Virginia High School League (VHSL) lists November 9, 2026, as the first practice date and November 30 as the first allowable contest date. Its basketball calendar schedules the state championships for March 11–13, 2027, at VCU's Siegel Center in Richmond.
For Central Virginia athletes, coaches and basketball supporters, that brings the state's biggest high school basketball stage close to home.
## The Road to Richmond Begins November 9
VHSL programs can begin their first practices on Monday, November 9, with contests permitted beginning Monday, November 30. That leaves approximately three weeks between the start of practice and the first allowable games.
Teams across Richmond, Henrico, Chesterfield, Hanover and surrounding communities will use the preseason to evaluate rosters, establish team chemistry and prepare for winter competition.
Individual schools set their own tryout schedules and participation requirements. Families should verify those details directly with their schools.
## February Will Separate the Contenders
The VHSL calendar schedules regional competition to begin February 19, 2027, with a regional deadline of February 27. State quarterfinals are scheduled for March 2, followed by semifinals March 5. Those rounds are scheduled at local sites.
Championship finals are scheduled for March 11–13 at the Siegel Center in Richmond. The calendar gives qualifying teams a defined route from regular-season play through regional and state competition.
## Why the Siegel Center Matters
The Siegel Center is home to VCU basketball, but championship weekend will put Virginia's high school players in the spotlight.
For athletes who reach the finals, playing in a college basketball arena can mark the culmination of months of practice, travel and competition. For younger players attending, the games can offer a firsthand look at the execution, discipline and teamwork required at the state championship level.
The Richmond venue also gives local basketball fans an opportunity to support the state's top qualifying teams without leaving Central Virginia.
## An Opportunity for the Entire Basketball Community
High school basketball brings together athletes, families, coaches, alumni and communities throughout the winter. School programs can help players develop leadership, represent their schools and compete in structured environments.
The upcoming season will produce new stories across the region, from emerging varsity contributors to seniors preparing for their final high school campaigns.
Not every team will reach Richmond in March, but the journey begins long before the championship games.
## Mark Your Calendars
The VHSL's published dates are November 9 for first practices, November 30 for first contests, February 19–27 for regional competition, March 2 for state quarterfinals, March 5 for semifinals and March 11–13 for championship finals.
Specific school schedules, matchups and championship participants are not yet established. Dates and venue details should be checked against the VHSL calendar for any changes.
